The deadliest days in Iraq since the war began in March 2003:
-August 21, 2005: At least 1,000 Shiite pilgrims are killed in a bridge stampede caused by somebody claiming there is a suicide bomber in their midst.
-March 2, 2004: Coordinated blasts from suicide bombers, mortars and planted explosives strike Shiite Muslim shrines in Karbala and Baghdad, killing at least 181 people.
-Sept. 29, 2005: At least 162 Iraqis are killed throughout the day, including at least 102 by three suicide car bombs in Balad.
-Feb. 28, 2005: In the deadliest single strike since the fall of Saddam Hussein, a suicide car bomber targets mostly Shiite police and national guard recruits in Hillah, killing 125 people.
-Jan. 5, 2006: Attacks kill 116 people, including five U.S. soldiers. Deadliest of the day are a suicide bombing in Ramadi that kills 56 people and a suicide blast near a Shiite Muslim shrine in Karbala that kills 49 people.
-Sept. 14, 2005: At least 122 Iraqis are killed, including 112 by a suicide car bomber in a crowd of day laborers in Baghdad.
-Feb. 1, 2004: Suicide bombers kill 109 people in two Kurdish party offices in Irbil.
